When God Appoints a Godly Wife

When God Appoints a Godly Wife
Part 1

Supposed Myth of Apostate Christians

“God has one woman picked out for you to marry. You are destined to be with her, and God will guide you to her.”
Introduction

Those “Christians” who espouse the above quote as a “myth” claim it cannot be found anywhere in the Bible. Either these “Christians” don’t read the Bible or they’re reading a counterfeit one. This series of sermons will disprove the naysayers with the tried and true King James Bible.

  1. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
Matthew 22, KJB

Furthermore, it is an established fact that the Lord has indeed intervened in the affairs of men and will continue to do so. All it takes is for righteous people to beseech the Lord for His intervention.

  1. This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
Daniel 4, KJB
  1. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
James 5, KJB

While God has certainly provided marriage partners before in the past, many times actually, I believe it was in this account that God was so pleased with His servant Abraham’s faith in Him to provide him a son in his old age and then a wife for that son that God caused that faith to be fulfilled.

  1. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Hebrews 11, KJB

This chapter of Genesis not only has a historical lesson that we can learn from but also a doctrinal lesson based on typology.

  • Abraham is a type of God the Father
  • Isaac is a type of God the Son
  • the faithful servant who obeyed his master’s bidding and had control of all his resources is a type of God the Holy Ghost
  • Rebekah is a type of the virgin Bride (the Church) who weds God the Son and becomes one flesh with His body

  1. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
  2. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
  3. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
  4. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Ephesians 5, KJB
The Oath-Bound Commission
  1. And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
  2. And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:
  3. And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
  4. But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
Genesis 24, KJB

The servant, as a type of the Holy Ghost, intercedes for the Son at the Father’s command. Placing his hand UNDER Abraham’s thigh, the servant is paying homage to his master just as the Holy Ghost is subservient to the Father. The servant’s gesture is taking an oath by Abraham’s strength of his thigh.

  1. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
  2. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Romans 8, KJB
Terms of the Commission
  1. And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
  2. And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
  3. The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.
  4. And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
  5. And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.
Genesis 24, KJB

The prospective Bride is put under no compulsion to come with the servant, as a type of the Holy Ghost. While the Holy Ghost offers the invitation, it never makes the decision.

The servant receives his commission and swears to execute it. It would have so easy for the servant to overpower Abraham and make off with all of his goods, but the servant is faithful to his master. Thus it is that this servant is a type of God the Holy Ghost, faithful always and forever.

A Gentile Operation
  1. And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.
  2. And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
Genesis 24, KJB

It should be noted at this point in history that the nation of Israel doesn't exist yet. Everyone is a Gentile. The ten camels that the servant took indicates that this is a Gentile operation, for 10 is the number of the Gentile.

  • The tenth man from Adam is the father of the Gentiles. 1 - Adam, 2 - Seth, 3 - Enos, 4 - Cainan, 5 - Mahalaleel, 6 - Jared, 7 - Enoch, 8 - Methuselah, 9 - Lamech, 10 - Noah.
    1. Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
    2. The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
    3. And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
    4. And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
    5. By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
    Genesis 10, KJB
  • The first Gentile kingdom is in Genesis 10:10.
    1. And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
    2. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.
    3. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
    Genesis 10, KJB
  • Acts 10 is where the Gospel included the Gentiles.
    1. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
    2. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
    3. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
    4. Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
    Acts 10, KJB
  • Romans 10 is the missionary call to the Gentiles.
    1. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
    2. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
    3. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
    4. And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
    Romans 10, KJB
  • A Gentile leper from a group of 10 Gentile lepers comes back to thank Jesus and glorify God.
    1. And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.
    2. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:
    3. And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
    4. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
    5. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
    6. And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.
    Luke 17, KJB
  • John 10 speaks of the Gentile sheep.
    1. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
    John 10, KJB
  • The last Gentile kingdom has 10 kings represented by 10 horns.
    1. Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
    2. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
    Daniel 7, KJB
  • Exodus 10 is where Moses is done dealing with Pharaoh, a Gentile.
    1. But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.
    2. And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.
    3. And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.
    Exodus 10, KJB
  • Isaiah 10:10 is a reference to Gentile kingdoms
    1. As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
    Isaiah 10, KJB
  • While God counts by 7’s, Gentiles count by 10’s.

The servant, as a type of the Holy Ghost, positions himself at the city’s well, which is the central and vital point of the city’s existence. Like Jesus, the Holy Ghost is the source of living water that a Gentile woman in need of will find at the well.

  1. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
  2. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
  3. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
  4. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
  5. Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
  6. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
John 4, KJB
Looking for a Sign
  1. And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
  2. Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
  3. And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Genesis 24, KJB

The Jewish culture requires the use of signs to determine the Will of God.

  1. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
1 Corinthians 1, KJB
  1. Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying,
  2. Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.
Isaiah 7, KJB
The Lord Answers Prayer
  1. And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
  2. And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
  3. And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
  4. And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
  5. And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
  6. And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
Genesis 24, KJB

Before the servant had finished praying, the Lord was answering his prayer, exceeding all expectations. The damsel that the Lord had appointed to be the wife of Isaac was not only of Abraham's house as he had required but “the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin.” When the Lord answers prayer in such a manner, it is cause for astonishment and “the servant ran to meet her.” He wasn't going to miss this answer to prayer for anything.

  1. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
  2. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Matthew 6, KJB
  1. And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
Isaiah 65, KJB

The English language has been so corrupted by modern use, especially by Bible critics, that “virgin” now seems to mean “unmarried” or “not having a husband.” So the Holy Ghost has added “neither had any man known her” to make it very clear that “virgin” means virgin. Another virgin, Mary, said the same thing. Even the unsaved know that not having a husband is not proof of virginity. God wants a clean, virgin and fair Bride for His Son, not a “dog.” Rebekah is a perfect type representing the Church, the virgin Bride of Christ.

  1. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
Luke 1, KJB
  1. Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?
Song of Solomon 6, KJB

Also note that Rebekah is an energetic worker. She didn’t loiter around, she “hasted” and she “ran.” To water ten camels, she had to haul enough water to float a barge.

  1. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
  2. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
  3. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
  1. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Proverbs 31, KJB
A Prayer of Thanksgiving and Blessing
  1. And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
  2. And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;
  3. And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?
  4. And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor.
  5. She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
  6. And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD.
  7. And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.
Genesis 24, KJB

Very often human nature’s logic persists over faith. The servant is wondering if “the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.” Is this woman single? Is she from Abraham’s kindred or not? Will she be willing to travel to Canaan for a blind marriage? Rebekah not only is a good-looking, hard-working, pure, young lady but she is also a woman of her word where she watered the camels until they were done drinking. She is the answer to a young man’s prayer for a wife, if that young man still goes by the Old Time Ethics of the Bible instead of the modern morality of a sin-filled world.

  1. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
  2. Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 7, KJB

“Room to lodge in” is the response of the sincere sinner who knows his house is barren and empty, and is in need of the Lord of Life.

  1. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
John 14, KJB
  1. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Revelation 3, KJB
